Decarbonisation journey

We are committed to our target of net zero scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050.

Our decarbonisation journey began in 2012 with the installation of nitrous oxide abatement technology at our nitric acid ammonium nitrate plants. These early projects have already delivered around 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) of emissions reductions.  

In 2022, we adopted an interim emissions target to achieve a 30 per cent reduction from a 2020 baseline by 2030, and net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050. We are on track to meet our interim ‘30 by 30’ target through the delivery of additional nitrous oxide abatement, energy efficiency projects and operational improvements.  

With a clear pathway developed for our N2O emissions we are increasingly turning our attention to solutions for our CO2 emissions, including large-scale carbon capture and storage, carbon utilisation, green hydrogen and electrification. 

Our ability to achieve net zero will largely be determined by how the technical maturity and commercial viability of these abatement options evolve over time.

Achieving net zero by 2050 will require ongoing commercial and technical discipline, supportive government policy settings and innovation to drive the emergence of commercially viable abatement options.  

While hard-to-abate sectors like ours face significant challenges, we are committed to finding practical, scalable solutions that will deliver a more sustainable future.
